Long Range Wide Area Networks

LoRaWAN stands for Long Range Wide Area Network. The name is pretty straightforward: LoRaWAN enables devices to communicate with the cloud over long distances. Each device transmits to the gateway, which then transmits to the internet on the devices behalf. While its physical transmission infrastructure, Long Range (LoRa), creates the communication link, LoRaWAN sets the foundation for communication between devices and the cloud. It does so by undertaking the network protocol role, cultivating the rules that determine how the data is transmitted despite differences in structure or design. Ultimately, LoRa allows for the remote end nodes to connect to the low power wide area networks (LoRaWAN). The messages travel from the endpoint devices through a gateway to reach the cloud. Then, the message arrives at a more sophisticated data analysis tool to provide visibility. 

This technology has had a tremendous impact on industry. Organizations of varying verticals and sizes are now empowered to utilize the benefits of IoT technologies within their infrastructure. This is because tools like WiFi and Bluetooth are exponentially more expensive and take longer periods to install. LoRaWAN requires less input and covers much longer ranges. Some key benefits of LoRaWAN is its low energy intake and low cost. In fact, thanks to the low power consumption, it enables devices to run for up to ten years on a small battery, capable of supporting millions of messages. The benefits of utilizing LoRaWAN for IoT include localization, increased visibility, and the collection of pertinent data to analyze in real-time.
